A studio can look perfect in photos and still fail on the day. On a big ad shoot you see it at 9 a.m.: the crew walks in, the lighting rig goes up, the set gets built, and the floor that looked huge in the listing is suddenly full of cables, stands and equipment cases.
By then the booking is paid for, the talent is on call and the client is watching. So you trim the set, move a light to a worse angle, or shoot tighter than the approved frame. That compromise ends up in the final film.
Photos and a square footage number won't warn you about any of this. If you're comparing an ad shoot studio in Mumbai for a large production, check these five things first: ceiling height, power, working space, parking and privacy.
Why Ceiling Height Matters More Than People Think
Ceiling height decides where your lights can go. Key lights, big softboxes and diffusion frames usually sit above the talent, not at eye level. Overhead light is soft and directional, and it keeps stands out of the frame. With a low ceiling, lights have to come down, stands creep into the shot, and the DOP spends the day working around the room.
Two kinds of shots suffer most. Full-length shots of a model or celebrity need the camera far back and the light well above, so head, body and shadows stay clean. Top-down product and food shots need room for the camera rig and the lights above it.
On the recce, ask for the usable clearance, not the stated height. Beams, AC ducts and sprinklers can lower the real height in parts of the floor. Stand where your set will go and look up, and bring your DOP if you can.
Power Supply for Heavy Lighting Setups
Professional lights draw a lot of power, and an ad shoot rarely uses just one. Keys, fills, backlights and background lights run together, along with monitors, cameras, chargers and the makeup room. If the studio can't carry that load, circuits trip mid-take and lights get switched off so others can stay on.
That changes how the scene is lit. A DOP who planned six lights may end up running three, and the film that gets shot isn't quite the one that was approved.
Capacity varies from studio to studio, so don't assume. Send your lighting plan early and ask what the floor can support, whether a generator can take the heavier lights, and whether an electrician is around on the day. Get it in writing for your shoot date. Many productions bring their own generator, which is another reason to check parking.
Working Space vs Advertised Square Footage
A studio can be big on paper and still feel cramped. Advertised square footage counts corners, walkways and the space the set itself takes up. What matters is how much clear floor you have once the day is running.
Picture everything in the room: the set, camera and dolly paths, light stands, equipment cases, a monitor area for the director and client, the crew, the talent and their team, and wardrobe and props. A set that fills most of the floor leaves no room for any of it.
Enough room means space around the set for lights and camera movement, a path behind the camera that doesn't need gear moved, and a clear monitor zone for the client. It also means a separate spot for lighting and equipment, so the main floor stays free.
Ask whether the walls move or are fixed, and ask for a floor plan, not just photos. Photos are taken with wide lenses and nobody in the room.
Parking and Vehicle Access
It's easy to forget parking while booking, and hard to fix on the day. A large shoot brings a vanity van, a generator truck, crew cars, equipment vehicles and client cars. With no space for them, vehicles end up on the street, the generator sits far from the set, and the crew spends the morning moving cars.
Ask how many four-wheelers fit on site, whether the vanity van and generator have their own spot, and how equipment gets loaded in. In Mumbai, where street parking near a studio is hard to predict, the answer can decide whether you start on time.
Privacy for Closed Sets
Celebrity talent, client stakeholders and confidential campaigns often need a closed set. An unlaunched product, an unannounced brand face or an unreleased script all need a shoot nobody else can see or walk into.
Before booking, ask whether other productions can use the same floor or nearby spaces on your dates, who can see the set during setup, and where talent waits and gets ready. Shared entrances, shared corridors and makeup areas that open onto the shooting floor are easy to miss.
Inside the 3rd Floor at Big 9
Big 9, 3rd Floor in Andheri West was built around these questions. Here's how it answers each one.
Height and lighting. The floor has a 14 ft height clearance, so lights can go above the set instead of beside it. A dedicated dry area for lighting setups keeps the main floor clear while the DOP and team plan more elaborate lighting.
Space. At 6,800 sq ft, it's one of the largest floors at 9 Wings, built for large ad films, celebrity shoots, fashion campaigns and TVCs. Movable walls, plus doors and windows you can rearrange, let you reshape the floor around the brief. Ready-to-shoot setups and curated IKEA furniture and props mean less to source from outside.
Parking. On-site parking for up to 10 four-wheelers, with dedicated space for vanity vans and generators.
Talent comfort. Three luxury makeup rooms, each with an attached restroom and balcony access, give talent and the hair and makeup teams room to prep away from the shooting floor.
Everyday needs. The pantry has an oven, refrigerator and induction stove, so it handles crew meals and doubles as a kitchen set for food or lifestyle shoots. The studio team stays on the floor through the shoot to help with setups, look changes and the modular elements.
For power and closed-set requirements, send your lighting plan and dates when you enquire, and the team can confirm what the floor supports and how your booking will be handled
